Liam Gallagher kicked off his Definitely Maybe tour at Sheffield’s Utilita Arena on Saturday, July 1st, with a spectacular performance that thrilled Oasis fans, both old and new.
The anticipation was palpable, and the Manchester icon delivered in spades, celebrating the Britpop band’s seminal debut album with a night to remember. The arena buzzed with excitement as The Stone Roses’ “I Am The Resurrection” played, setting the stage for what was to come. Throwback clips of a young Gallagher filled the screens before he finally made his grand entrance.
True to form, Liam started the show with a bang, launching into a powerful rendition of “Rock ‘N’ Roll Star,” the perfect opener for both the album and the live set. The Burnage rocker treated the audience to a 20-track setlist packed with fan favorites from the album, just as he had promised. Songs like “Columbia,” “Shakermaker,” “Up In The Sky,” and “Digsy’s Dinner” (which hadn’t been performed live since 1995) resonated throughout the arena.
Joined by original Oasis guitarist and co-founder Bonehead, Liam also delighted fans with B-sides such as “Cloudburst,” “I Will Believe,” “D’Yer Wanna Be A Spaceman,” and “(It’s Good) To Be Free,” many of which hadn’t seen a live performance since the mid-’90s.
Although his estranged brother and former bandmate Noel was not present, Liam paid homage to him by performing the Noel-sung Oasis B-side “Half The World Away,” dedicating the song to his older sibling. He took it a step further by playing the demo version of “Lock All The Doors,” which later became a single for Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.
The night continued with more album tracks, and Liam returned to the stage for two encores. The first encore featured “Supersonic,” “Slide Away,” and “Live Forever,” leading the Sheffield crowd in a massive singalong of his favorite Oasis track. He closed the show by taking fans back to where it all began, performing Oasis’ cover of The Beatles’ “I Am The Walrus,” the song that ended their set at King Tut’s in 1993 and changed the course of his life forever.
Liam Gallagher wasn’t the only one who thought the night was extraordinary; the 13,600-strong crowd was equally ecstatic. After the show, Liam expressed his gratitude on Twitter, writing: “Sheffield you was and always will be BIBLICAL go easy you mad heads LG x.”
