Another day, another Oasis teaser — and this time the clues appear to take us back to one of the most famous episodes in Noel Gallagher’s Oasis history.
The new video opens in Burbank, Los Angeles, outside the unmistakable Corner Cottage. But while the location clearly points to California, the details hidden around the pick-up truck seem to suggest that the story may not end there.
The soundtrack provides perhaps the biggest clue: “Talk Tonight.”
The story behind “Talk Tonight”
In 1994, following the infamous Oasis show at the Whisky a Go Go in Los Angeles, Noel Gallagher walked away from the band. He travelled to San Francisco, where he met Oasis fan Melissa Lim, who took him around the city and helped convince him not to abandon the band.
But there is an important detail that is often overlooked.
According to Noel himself, he wrote “Talk Tonight” in Las Vegas. So while San Francisco is an essential part of the story behind “Talk Tonight”, Las Vegas is the place Noel himself identified as where he began writing the song.
Look closely at the pick-up
And this is where the new teaser becomes particularly intriguing.
The California-registered pick-up is covered with what appear to be deliberate clues.
Among them is a plate reading “YT1C N15”. Read backwards, and using the numbers as substitutes for letters, it becomes: SIN CITY
There is also a “HIT ME FOR SLOTS” sticker — another unmistakable nod to Las Vegas.
Other details appear to reinforce the idea of a journey through the American Southwest, including a reference to the World’s Largest Thermometer, the famous roadside landmark in Baker, California, on the route between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.
There are also references to Burt Bacharach and what appears to be a possible nod to A Horse with No Name, adding further layers to an already deliberately cryptic scene.
Are Oasis telling the story of Noel’s escape?
Perhaps the most interesting interpretation is that the teaser is not simply telling us “Los Angeles” or “Las Vegas”.
It may be telling the story of the journey between them.
The video begins in Los Angeles — the place where the infamous episode started — while “Talk Tonight” provides the soundtrack to the story. From there, the clues on the vehicle appear to point towards Las Vegas, the city where Noel said he began writing the song.
In other words:
Los Angeles → San Francisco → Las Vegas
A story that began with Noel walking away from Oasis eventually produced one of the band’s most beloved songs.
But with “Talk Tonight” playing in the background and “SIN CITY” hidden backwards on the number plate, Las Vegas is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
